Supportive care
A cancer diagnosis can be a life changing event, for both you and your loved ones. Dealing with the disease and its consequences can be physically and emotionally draining. You may experience anxiety, insecurity, anger and grief. You may struggle with questions such as: why me, what about my partner, my children, how to go on? A social worker, a psychologist or a spiritual counselor can help with your questions and dealing with your emotions. They can also answer questions of your loved one and other family members.
You can contact the supportive care services of the UMCG if you have difficulties in or with:
- processing and accepting your illness
- the relationship with your partner, children or family
- adjusting to your new (social) situation
- making choices about your treatment
- the communication with the hospital caregivers
- studying, working or receiving benefits
- dealing with loss and grief
- questions related to spirituality and faith
- your sexuality or your self-image
The website of the UMCG Comprehensive Cancer Center provides more information on psychosocial support and follow-up care.
