Donal Hollywood award for stem cell sparing IMRT

1 April 2019

Roel Steenbakkers has won the Donal Hollywood award for best abstract at the 38th ESTRO conference. His abstract on stem cell sparing IMRT was selected from more than 2200 submissions for its clarity, scientific rigor and innovation.

The abstract is based on the results of a randomized-controlled clinical trial, performed at the Radiation Oncology department of the University Medical Center Groningen. The results indicate that the sparing of stem cells during radiotherapy treatment may help reduce the side effects of xerostomia (‘dry mouth’).

The ESTRO conference is the yearly meeting of the European SocieTy for Radiotherapy & Oncology. This year’s meeting takes place in Milan, from 26 to 30 April.
